History

The Cervantes Society of America was founded in 1978 and held its first membership meeting in San Francisco in December, 1979. Over the years, the CSA has maintained visibility in the academic community in the U.S. and abroad through publication of the journal Cervantes and collaborations with Hispanists worldwide. The Society's constitution, revised in 2017 and 2022, is available here. The CSA constitution was first published in 1986 and amended in 2008. The official languages of the Society are English and Spanish.


annual business meeting

The CSA holds a yearly business meeting at the annual conference of the Renaissance Society of America. This meeting is open to all members of the CSA. At the business meeting, members can volunteer for committees, approve resolutions submitted by the Executive Council, and learn about the CSA’s latest initiatives. The meeting features a keynote address by a renowned scholar in the field of Cervantes studies. A brief report from the 2023 meeting can be downloaded here.


CSA ACTIVITIES

  • Provision of grants to graduate students and nontenure-track scholars to present original scholarship on Cervantes at approved conference venues

  • Collaboration with the Asociación de Cervantistas for a joint international Cervantes conference in 2023

  • Sponsorship of a North American Cervantes conference every three years
