Call for Nominations: Editor, Cervantes: Journal of the Cervantes Society of America
Deadline for Initial Inquiries: 1 September 2025
The Cervantes Society of America is now accepting nominations, including self-
nominations, for the position of editor of its journal, Cervantes: Journal of the Cervantes
Society of America. Published since 1980, Cervantes is a peer-reviewed, semi-annual
journal dedicated to the study of the life and works of Miguel de Cervantes. It provides a
platform for rigorous scholarly articles in English and Spanish that offer fresh
perspectives on the author’s literary, cultural, and historical contexts, including
interdisciplinary approaches and innovative methodologies. The CSA publishes
Cervantes in collaboration with the University of Toronto Press.
The editor serves a 5-year term, with possibility of renewal, and is responsible for
editing all material in the journal, overseeing submissions and peer review (which uses
the Scholar One platform managed by UTP), making final determinations about each
issue’s content and organization, and appointing and supervising a book review editor
and other staff positions as needed. The editor position is not salaried and does not
require local institutional support for production or staffing. UTP provides and manages
copyediting, design, and production services and is responsible for the distribution,
promotion, and online presence of the journal, in consultation with the editor. Production
costs and financial considerations are managed jointly by UTP and the Managing
Director of the CSA and are not part of the editor’s responsibilities. The editor also
serves on the Executive Council of the CSA and prepares reports for a yearly council
meeting and a separate annual membership meeting (held at the Renaissance Society
of America’s conference). The editor is expected to attend at least one of these annual
meetings.
The ideal candidate for editor will bring an energetic vision for the journal’s future as we
collaborate with UTP to raise our international profile, grow our base of authors and
subscribers, and prepare for the journal’s appearance in international research indexes.
Fluency in both English and Spanish is required. The CSA invites scholars at all career
stages to apply, including those from outside the United States and Canada. Interested
applicants should send a cover letter and full curriculum vitae to both Mercedes Alcalá
Galán, chair of the search committee (malcalag@wisc.edu) and Cory Reed, CSA
president (creed@austin.utexas.edu).
We hope to receive initial inquiries by 1 September 2025, although the consideration of
candidates will likely extend beyond that date until the position is filled. We anticipate a
transition period of collaboration between the current and new editors to begin in late
2025 or early 2026, with the new editor assuming full responsibilities a few months later.
The search committee includes CSA past-presidents Mercedes Alcalá Galán (University
of Wisconsin), Carolyn Nadeau (Illinois Wesleyan University), Steven Hutchinson
(University of Wisconsin), and Adrienne Martín (University of California, Davis), and
current president Cory Reed (University of Texas at Austin). Please direct all queries to
Mercedes Alcalá Galán at malcalag@wisc.edu and Cory Reed at
creed@austin.utexas.edu .
